Yes it is official. I now own a Nook. I didn't go out and buy it, my mom got the new fancy Nook for Christmas and wanted me to have her old one. I never thought I would own an E-reader and now I do. My first experience, not so great.
I went with my parents to Foxwoods a casino in Connecticut. We took a jet ferry out of Orient Point (the very end of the northern Long Island tip) to New London Connecticut then jumped on a bus that drove us to the casino. For thirty two dollars a person! You really can't beat that. Back to the point of my story. I had 350 books at my fingertips to read during the trip. I left my paperback at home but I didn't need it. No I had my trusty Nook and all 350 books in my moms library. I turned the Nook on and after reading ten pages of A Tale of Two Cities, what happens? Low battery! We were only fifteen minutes into the trip. Of course my moms response was, "Didn't you charge it?" So of course my response was, "No! It's a book!" If I brought my paperback with me I wouldn't have had to worry about a low battery. You don't have to charge real books! Then I was thrilled when my mom turned hers on and had no signal to download a new book. We were in the middle of the Long Island Sound, no wifi. So there we sat doing a crossword puzzle in a book I just happened to throw in my bag while our Nooks sat lifeless on the table.
I haven't given up on the Nook just yet. I just wanted to pass along my inconvenience with you all. I don't know if I will ever be an advocate for the E-readers, but I'm going to try and be a little more open to them. In the comments I want to hear your pros and cons of the E-reader and if you still prefer a real book.

when you recharge it, as long as you don't keep it connected to the internet while you read, the battery lasts a long time.
ReplyDeleteI used to have a kindle and I really liked it, but then I broke the screen, and honestly, as much as I liked it, I don't miss it.. what I miss is having real copies of many of the books that were on it.. like The Hunger Games trilogy.
I don' think I'll buy another, though if someone gave me one I'd be happy :)
Yes! I feel like we are on the same page (that sounds intentional its not. lol) A real book you can't break. Not that a real book can't be damaged but you break the screen of an E-reader and you lose not one book but all your E-books!
ReplyDeleteBut I can't argue with free :)
My first experience with my e-reader (Kobo) was on an airplane to Mexico. The flight attendant kept telling me to power it down for take off, and I had to keep assuring her that it was powered down. When the Kobo is turned off it leaves the cover image of the book on the screen, so that's what was confusing her. It sucked, though, to have to power the stupid thing down in the first place for take off, especially since I was right in the middle of reading DIVERGENT by Veronica Roth. Ahh! There are many, many reasons why the real thing is so much better than an e-reader.
ReplyDeleteYes! Another person who prefers a real book! You don't know how excited this makes me. The Nook also leaves a picture on the screen when you power it down. That's good to know about take off though. I know you have to turn off all electronics, but an E-reader, to me, is a book and I wouldn't think of it. I hate flying. Hate it with a passion and the only thing that gets me through take off is a book. Now I know I have to have the real thing with me. Thanks. That could have been disastrous.
ReplyDeleteHaha. Oh geez. When I travel I always have the recharger for my Nook in my briefcase.
ReplyDeleteI buy the physical books of stories I think I might read again. If I know I'm only going to read the story once, I usually buy it on my Nook. That way if I were to ever break my Nook I still own the stories I really want.
I agree thought. E-readers are not as cool as the real thing. But it really beats lugging around three books for my business trips (plus my laptop.)
Hopefully your next experience is better :)
Thanks Kelley. I hope my next experience is better too. At least now I know to carry the charger with me. The ferry had a place to plug it in of course even the bus had an outlet. I guess carrying the Nook and it's charger is still better than lugging around three real books.
ReplyDeleteYay! I still haven't made my mind up between it and the Kindle, but I'll let my husband decide. I told him I want an e-reader for my birthday. I guess I'll wait and see which he chooses. Enjoy yours!
ReplyDeleteEmily: Happy Birthday! (In advance I presume) I hope you have better luck. Would love to hear what you think after using it.
ReplyDeleteMy husband bought me a Kindle Fire for Christmas. I do like it, but I miss holding a book in my hand. I like the smell of the pages. I know that sounds strange but it's just how I like things.
ReplyDeleteThe Kindle is fun, though. There are a lot of cools things I can put on there besides books. And it makes it easier when I travel. But I'll always be a book girl.
Another book girl at heart! I love it. And it is not strange because I know exactly what you mean :)
ReplyDeleteI don't have an e-reader yet, but I have my eye (and heart) on an iPad. I want something that's more than just an e-reader, and I always said that my first Apple purchase (for me, anyway) would be a tablet. As for preference, I too prefer physical books, but there's only so much shelf-space, especially for books I may not read more than once. That's where an e-reader would be very useful.
ReplyDeleteColin: I would be all for the iPad. So many of my friends have one and love it. I like the fact that it is so much more than an e-reader. And I couldn't agree with you more about the shelf-space. My poor bookshelf looks like it's folding in and about to snap. Not to mention the piles I have on coffee tables and nightstands. After awhile it looks more like clutter than a nice table book.
ReplyDeleteHahaha! Oh, the things you don't even think about, huh? I have an iPad, and I'm still getting used to reading on it. It can never replace real books, though!
ReplyDeleteJessica: Another book lover! Yes! And that's the thing with real books you don't need to think about anything else other than the words on the pages. lol.
