Road Trip Wednesday: Where Do You Buy Your Books?

Road Trip Wednesday is a ‘Blog Carnival,’ where YA Highway's contributors post a weekly writing- or reading-related question that begs to be answered. In the comments, you can hop from destination to destination and get everybody's unique take on the topic.

Topic of the Week:  Where do you buy your books?

I used to buy my books at Border's. It was right up the road from my house, so I was extremely upset when they closed. However, there is a bookstore right down the road from my parent's house called Best Bargain Books. In the summer my mom and I usually walk there. The best part: they let us bring Frank (my dog) in. They have a combination of used books and new books and you can always find a great deal. My only complaint is their YA section is very small.

Barnes and Nobles is my other go to store. It's convenient. Though, I always check Best Bargain Books first if I have a specific book in mind since they tend to be three to five dollars cheaper.

Other places I buy books:
Costco
Walmart
Amazon
Ebay (I'm on a tight budget and you can buy in bulk. I got all the books in the Harry Potter series, hardcovers, for $20 bucks total.)
My Mom (I don't have to pay for those though)

Where do you buy books?

  1. I buy at B&N it's literally a quarter mile away and I really do love that store. But when I'm traveling in a city that has an Indie Bookstore I try to buy at least one book from there. There's also a Half Price Books close to me that I check out sometimes.

I also have a Nook. Which is awesome for travel. So I use that a lot too.

  2. I also borrow books from my mom :-) and I wish I could just walk to a bookstore, even though hubby might strategically never allow for this to happen!

  3. My mum recently sent me a couple of Anne Perry novels, so I guess I get books from her too--only they travel 3,000 miles to get here! :)

  4. Kelley: If B&N was that close to me I would probably spend most of my time there. The closest one is 15 minutes away. Not far but around the corner is so much easier. And I am still resisting the Nook but my mom just bought the new one and told me I can have her old one. Loaded. So I am sooo tempted to crossover to the dark side.

Commutinggirl: That's why you wait for him to go to work or out to get milk. But if you're like me once you get in there it turns into an hour or two browsing session and that won't be good. You'll get caught. lol. Or you just say you're going for a walk. Hide the books in the bushes. Okay that's bad.

Colin: 3,000 miles! Now that's an awesome mom. My mom is always like, sure you can have them, come get them.

  5. Nice list ;) I miss buying on bookstores, I miss visiting bookstores.
It's great you can borrow books from your mother. My mom reads genres I don't like much, so I leave her books to her lol

  6. Juliana: I'm lucky because my mom was never a reader. Ever! I turned her on to reading with YA books and romances, my favorite genres, and now that is all she reads. Worked out perfectly for me :)

  7. Ebay, that's an awesome idea.

I buy most of mine on amazon because they are cheaper, but once a month I go to B&N and buy a couple there too. I don't want them to close like Borders did, so I try to give them some business.

I wish there were independently owned bookstores around me

  8. Cristina: Ebay is amazing. Seriously. I got a lot of 20 books by Linda Howard (which I have yet to read because I had them shipped to my parents house and my mom stole the box!)I paid less than ten dollars for all including shipping. You can't beat that! Check it out! You can even narrow your search down to specifics. Including: free shipping, genre, age range and so on.

  9. I always forget about Ebay. Christmas and birthdays around here always end up being book-giving occasions, which I love. So my mom has given me plenty of books too =)

  10. My mum's not much of a reader so I've never been able to go to her for books. My family aren't big on reading. Some do but it's mainly crime and poetry, which isn't my kind of thing. I have no idea where I got the writing and reading bug from!

  11. Jaime: Books make the best gifts. If I only got books for Christmas I'd be ecstatic. Doesn't take much to make me happy. I asked for books, post it's and index cards this year :)

Robin: Crime and poetry aren't my thing either. And just like you I'm not sure where I got the writing and reading thing from. I turned my mom on to reading and before that no one in my family read let alone took a second to write something down. I"m happy I discovered it on my own :)

  13. Jamie: Thank you. When I first saw it, it made me smile so I had to have it.

  14. Someone else gifting me books is really the best way to get them :)

  16. The picture of those piling books = eye candy. Love it! I'm a B&N girl myself; I could spend all day there! Costco's good too, and of course, I love the library! Glad to have found your blog. :)
