~Bridesmaids~

BridesmaidsLast week I went to see Bridesmaids with a group of girlfriends. I'll admit when I had first seen a preview for the movie I immediatley voiced my opinion on how I would never see it because it looked like a rip off of The Hangover. Boy am I glad I changed my mind. First off Bridesmaids was in my opinion better than The Hangover and secondly during a time when I didn't think I'd laugh again I almost peed my pants. Once the movie was over my cheeks hurt so bad from the never ending laughter.

Gilmore Girls: The Complete Series CollectionI don't want to talk about anything in particular because I don't want to ruin it for those who have yet to see it, but I will say that Melissa McCarthy or Sookie St James from Gilmore Girls as I and I'm sure most people know her (and if you don't go out an d buy every season on DVD NOW!), stole every single scene she was in. I've always looked at her as this adorable woman that I just wanted to hug, but in this movie she is rough and tough and even though she was a tad bit scary I still wanted to hug her. I expect to see much more of her in the future.

Also Kristin Wigg to be quite honest, never heard of her and now I want to see everything that she has ever been in. If it wasn't Melissa McCarthy cracking me up it was Kristin Wigg. Her character made me laugh, snort and more times than I'd like to admit cry. The raw emotion the Kristin Wigg brought to the character is what made this movie better than The Hangover. You genuinely feel bad for her and more times than not I could relate to her. This movie was not just about the laughs it had a storyline that really tugged at the heartstrings and had you rooting for Kristin Wigg's character. I'm usually against sequels, but with this group of actresses I think if done right a sequel to Bridesmaids would be just as amazing.

Now if you think this is a chick flick guess again. As the credits began to roll a guy sitting in front of me stood up grabbed his side and said "My ribs hurt so freakin bad from laughing!"

My Grandma & Why She is Awesome!

I completely forgot to blog about my grandmother and why she is such a tough chick. My grandmother for whom I was named will be seventy nine years old in August. For as long as I could remember she would get out of breath easily but always equated it to emphysema which she was diagnosed with close to thirty years ago. Recently she found out it was not emphysema but a heart condition that needed to be corrected. Needless to say my grandmother had to have surgery.

She was scared. It was obvious in the way she spoke and even the look in her eye. I, however, knew how tough and how strong she was and knew she would get through it fine. My cousin and I have always said the world would come to an end, but grandma would be standing on top of it complaining there was no provolone left in the fridge. She needed a little more convincing. My grandmother and I are very much a like (which is why I can get away with what I said) and I assured her she would be fine because she was one tough bitch.

The surgery was a success. She had one of her valves repaired and another replaced with a pig valve. The things they do today in the medical field astonishes me. I joked with my grandma and told her she's part pig now and reminded her that yes she is one tough bitch in which she responded, "Yes I am!"

It's been probably about two months now since the surgery and even though she had one set back after falling and hitting her head in the bathroom she is doing great. She is going through physical therapy and all is well. Thank God.

She told the family that she would never go through with it again and the only reason she did it was for us. My grandparents have always been the rock of our family and after my grandfather passed away she became the sole support system. I know she's getting up in age and it terrifies me to think that one day she won't be here, but for now she is happy and healthy and that is what matters most.

Rambling

My new obsession is Ebay. I've been trying to save money, but can't seem to kick my book buying habit so Ebay is making it possible for me to save while still being able to buy books. I may have taken it a step too far since now I have about fifty books sitting on my bookshelf waiting for me to read with another six being shipped. I have officially cut myself off. However, with the amount of money I spent it was worth it.

As a writer you need to read. It helps you discover different styles of writing as well as helps you develop your own style. So I decided to read outside of my box which has pretty much always consisted of YA.
I'm becoming obsessed with romance books. As predictable as they are I can never seem to put the books down. I'm a sucker for a happy ending.

I've read at least a dozen Nora Roberts books and what I found interesting is at least of the books I have read is that they all follow the same basic outline. Sarah Dessen who I love is another writer who follows the same basic outline in her books. But you know what, it works. And you know what they say, if it ain't broke don't fix it.

I also now  have quite a large collection  of R.L. Stine books both Fear Street and Goosebumps. I remember loving R.L. Stine as a kid and I can't wait to go back down memory lane and discover why I loved him all over again. I'm amazed at how many books he has actually written. I wonder if he ever gets writer's block.

Okay this post was just some random babble and I promise the next one will be a little more structured and interesting.

Controversial YA topics & Why they Are Needed!

I hated to read when I was younger. Obviously that is no longer the case, but as a teenager there was nothing I despised more than being assigned a book in class. I hated to read. I hated to try and figure out the moral of the stories and the bigger meaning of what it was the author was trying to get across, simply because the books that were assigned were stories that I could not relate to.

Though, I can't for the life of me remember the name of the the first YA book that I read (and am kicking myself for it) that actually caught my interest I still remember the story. It was a story about a girl who cut herself in order to release the pain that she was feeling within. My friend, who unlike me, read a book a week had taken it out of the library and after reading the first page I borrowed it. At the time I had no idea what cutting was or that people actually took razors and other sharp objects to their skin. It didn't make me want to cut myself after reading it, however, it did make me aware that cutting was very much a part of reality. It also made it easier for me to understand why people cut and that was exactly what I needed when two years after reading the book I began dating a boy who cut.

There is nothing that can fully prepare you for when you find out the person you love has been purposely harming themselves. I still remember seeing the red jagged cuts sticking out from under the sleeve of his t-shirt and when I asked him what he did he reacted in panic, pulling his sleeve down so quickly, his facial expressions completely changing into something I had never seen on his face before. I was persistent, though, I didn't let it go until finally he lifted his sleeve only to reveal hundreds of jagged red scabs. My heart wrenched at the sight since it was so obvious it was self inflicted, but if I had never read that book that concept would never have crossed my mind, and when he finally admitted to the self mutilation I didn't need to ask the obvious questions in order to educate myself.

I guess you could say because I read that book I was prepared. I recalled why the main character of the book cut herself and tried to talk to him from that prospective as if I understood. It didn't take long for him to open up to me. He told me he never had anyone he could talk to about it and was happy he had me. He explained how he felt so much pain inside and when he cut himself and saw the blood it was as if that pain was being released. Then he showed me the box of razors he had stored for those times when he desperately needed that release. They were industrial razors, hard sturdy metal and a majority of them had dried up blood crusted to their edges. I felt sick at the thought of him feeling that using the sharp metal against his skin was all he had. I tried to take the box from him and he ripped in back to his chest faster than I could blink. I remembered the story of the girl and how she would do anything to find a place to cut and I assured myself his reaction to me wasn't about me and in that moment I realized that box was a lifeline to him. It took a long time to convince him to give me that box, but I did. I remembered how the girl felt so alone and I assured him over and over again that he wasn't alone and that if he ever felt the desire to cut he could call me.

We broke up as most fifteen year old teenagers relationships aren't meant for the long run and I'm not going to say he didn't cut again because I did find marks on his arms from time to time, but that isn't my point. My point is because I read a book I was more prepared to deal with a situation that I otherwise would have been clueless and helpless about.

Now cutting is only one of the subjects of YA books that many parents feel are not acceptable for their children to be reading. I have to take a deep breath to write that sentence because it hits a nerve deep within me. Do you know how easier middle school and high school would have been for me if I knew books like these actually existed? Parents can deny all they want that their children can not in anyway possibly be able to relate to these topics and guess what they couldn't be more wrong. Teens deal with such a wide range of issues and most are too ashamed or scared to actually let their parents in. Teens drink, they have sex, they do drugs and partake in illegal activities. Teens cheat on tests, cut class, lie about a test grade, sneak out of the house, smoke cigarettes, it's what they do and if you believe differently you are very naive. Being a teenager is about taking risks, doing things that you know you shouldn't but feeling the urge so strong that you can't resist. I know I can't speak for all teenagers because I'm sure there are teenagers who obey the rules their parents have set, but I'm speaking for my teenage self and all of the teenagers I knew and know.

Another controversial topic in YA is teen pregnancy. Gasp! And you can gasp all you want but that doesn't change the fact that it isn't something that happens. Some say shows like 16 and pregnant are the reason why so many young girls are getting pregnant. I beg to differ. When I graduated high school, 16 and pregnant didn't exist and five girls in my senior class were pregnant or had already had their child and that is not counting the underclassman. It happens from carelessness and having the mentality of thinking it'll never happen to me. Writing about these topics in YA can show girls that Yes it can happen to you. It's not as if these books glorify teen pregnancy if anything they do the exact opposite and show the dark side of having a baby when you yourself are still a child.

I know I'm jumping from topic to topic, but I'm trying to get everything in  so just bare with me. Another topic that seems to be in many YA books is the death of a friend and/or classmate. Again a topic that is controversial because according to some people this rarely happens. Again they would be wrong. My senior year we lost a boy who was a friend to everyone. He was as many called "popular" yet he didn't restrict himself to that single group. I still remember walking into school that morning and seeing the tear stained cheeks of my fellow classmates as well as many of my teachers. He wasn't the last person to die that year nor was he the first to die in that school district. My high school seemed to have a curse and I still remember my teacher saying as she mourned the loss of another student, "I can't do this anymore. Every year I lose a student. I just can't do it anymore." The culprit of these deaths usually were car accidents or drug overdoses, though, when a student would die of a drug overdose the school refused to memorialize them over the loud speaker as they would if the student had passed in a car accident.

In middle school I had a best friend. From the minute we met in sixth grade we were inseparable. He was pale, with freckles and only came up to my chest. It was obvious he was an easy target for bullies. I spent my entire years in middle school defending him against guys who insisted he was gay. He would call me crying at night and I would comfort him in the only way I knew how, saying that I knew he wasn't gay and so did all of his other friends and that is all that mattered. Now if I had read a book at the time about a character who was struggling with their sexuality I would have realized while the bullies were wrong in what they were doing they were right in what they were saying. I denied, denied, denied for so long because I hated seeing the tears in his eyes, but I never stopped to think that maybe he was and that was what was hurting him more. We lost contact after high school but recently I found out that he is doing very well and is happily engaged to his boyfriend. And while I couldn't be happier for him it still makes me sad because he spent a majority of his life denying who he really was.

When I was younger, very young, I lied, I cheated, I drank, I smoked and I even sneaked out in the middle of the night to meet up with friends. My parents weren't dumb. For the most part they knew what was going on. However, I think they did the right thing. They didn't try to mold me into what they thought a perfect teenager should be. They accepted me for who I was and when I got caught I got grounded. When I didn't get caught and they suspected something they asked questions in a way that made me know that they knew which was enough to scare me. They didn't threaten me or try to tell me what it was I had to do. They let me be a teenager and guided me the best they could. Now back then I know for a fact that there were some people aka parents who did not approve of their children hanging out with me because lets face it I was a bad influence. However, unlike my parents they threatened their children and I'm happy to say that most of those children are now adults with dead end jobs, drinking/drug problems and still living at home. Me the bad seed who they didn't want their children hanging out with, has her own apartment, worked a full-time job while going to school full time to get my bachelor's degree in marketing and am now actively trying to get published.

Now this is my main point. Books are meant to entertain and a good book will even help you when you can relate to a character, however, they are not parents. Parents need to stop blaming books and lets add to that movies and television shows, for their child's behavior. You are the parent! It is your responsibility to teach your child what is right and what is wrong. It is not the job of a writer to do so. Writers simply write, they tell the dark truths that many are too scared to admit to and if you were a good parent you would realize that these books are the perfect platform to be able to speak to your children about topics that you otherwise may not have been able to. Stop denying! Your child isn't perfect and by thinking so you are only doing damage to them. Instead pick up one of these books with the controversial topic and read it then give it to your child to read. Once you both have read it sit down and discuss it. Start your own book club and learn about what it is that your child is really feeling and stop blaming everyone else for your crappy parenting skills. Books you may want to read:
DreamlandSpeak: 10th Anniversary EditionCutThe DUFF: (Designated Ugly Fat Friend)Willow

Now these are just a few out of the so many great YA books. Would love for suggestions as well so please post in the comments a YA book that you think every teen should read. And if you know the name of the book that I read so many years ago please post that in the comments as well. I thought it was Cut, but it's not. I'm desperately trying to remember what the book was called.

*Though, I have not read all of the above titles I have friends who have raved about them and have recommended them to me. The ones I have not read are currently on my to read list. Look for my feedback on future blogposts.

The Loss of a Friend

I guess you can say I have been putting off writing this post. A couple of weeks ago I lost a coworker and dear friend to breast cancer. She was diagnosed with stage four breast cancer eleven years ago, a year before we started working together. However, you would never know that she was sick. She always looked healthy. She never complained and she went through her treatments as if it was another day. Beth was the nicest most sincere person I have ever met and I feel that I am a better person because I knew her.

It is so rare these days to meet a person that despite all of their hardships, cares so deeply about others. Beth did. She cared so much about the people in her life and it would make me think if there was only more people in the world like her this would be a better place.

To be diagnosed eleven years ago with stage four breast cancer it is obvious that she put up one hell of a fight. She didn't want the disease to win. She had so much more she wanted to see and do.

The night of the American Idol finale my heart broke. Every Thursday Beth and I would speculate about who we thought was going to be sent home and every Thursday night we would text each other about the result show. However, Beth missed the finale by a week and when it was over and the winner was announced I couldn't text her. I almost did out of habit and once I realized that she wouldn't be writing me back I lost it.

It's the little things like that that always hit me unexpectedly. As stupid as it sounds when she passed all I kept thinking about was how she would never get to see the final season of Friday Night Lights. It was her favorite show and she talked about it so much that she got me hooked even buying me the seasons on DVD for my birthday. She couldn't wait to see what was going to happen with all of the characters and now she'll never know. And yes it might be stupid to think of something so mundane but that's what Beth and I did. We talked about television and movies. We discussed our favorite celebrities and what we were planning on doing on the weekend. And as mundane as it may be it is what I miss the most.

Before Beth passed she got really sick and it wasn't the first time that this had happen and in the past she had always bounced back after a few weeks. So I expected to see her again. It's as if James Taylor's song is on constant replay in my head:

I see fire and I see rain
I've seen Sunny days that I thought would never end
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend
But I always thought that I would see you one more time again

I honestly thought that I would see her again. I wish I could have had the chance to say goodbye. She was more than a coworker and more than a friend. When you work with people every day for ten years they become your family. And before she passed she texted me how she couldn't wait to come back to work because she missed her family.

Every day I sit in my office and stare out at her desk and I keep expecting her to walk in and sit down. It's been two weeks and it still hasn't sunk in completely. I never looked at Beth and thought wow she's really sick or wow she must have cancer and I think that's why it is so hard for me to accept that she is gone.

I wanted to write a post that would make everyone see how truly special she really was, but it is absolutely impossible to put it into words. So just know that the world was a better place when Beth was in it and now that she's not it seems a little dimmer.

~Update~

Just a quick update:

Instead of updating my blog regularly I have basically been spending my free time reading and writing. I have so much to update you on including books I have read, my new obsession with Ebay, writing and rewriting, movies, my grandma (she's amazing) and how much I hate cancer.

Hopefully tomorrow I will have the time to sit and write about one or more of these topics.

Still Busy

With trying to keep my resolution to read more I have fallen behind on my other resolutions, such as blog more often. I can't believe it's been another month since my last post. I'm seriously slacking. Well the good news is I have read twenty books so far for the year 2011. I mentioned what I had read in my last post so just to give you an idea since the last post I have read:
Nora Roberts' Bride Quartet
Book 1 Vision in White
Book 2 Bed of Roses
Book 3 Savor the Moment
Book 4 Happy Ever After

I have actually never read a Nora Roberts book. I thought they were all about woman who have been divorced and have kids and so far from what I can relate to. However, this series was about a younger group of woman who of course all find their perfect somebody. They were fast, easy and fun reads. If you want a somewhat perdictable romance these are perfect for you.

I also read:

Water for Elephants
Which was slow moving at first and the writing was a bit choppy but once you get through the first hundred pages it starts picking up steam. It was more interesting than anything to see how the circus worked during that era. I also liked how it was a reflection of Jacob's memories, being able to read about him later in life gave greater insight to him as a whole. I owuld definitely recommend this book with a warning to just brave the first hundred pages because it will be well worth it. Very curious to see how the movie will interpret the book.

Toni Blake's Swept Away and Letter's to A Secret Lover.
Both were really good, but Letter's to A Secret Lover had me up to crazy hours reading.

I also read another book that hasn't been released yet and will talk about in the future, but for right now I'm just going to say Wow and Holy S*** it was so good. I've never read a book that had so many cliff hangers and WTF kind of moments. Just when you think you know what's going to happen next everything gets turned upside down.

As you can see I drifted away from YA for awhile. I like to mix it up and not to mention I'm a sucker for a good romance novel. However, I can never stay away from YA for too long so I am back and am currently reading Jennifer Echols Endless Summer.

I didn't make it through the first rounds of the Amazon Contest, but just as well. I guess thats what I get for throwing together a pitch in five minutes. Oh well. I'm looking at it as there are bigger and better things on the horizon. Not to mention that my first manuscript is still on submission. It's been about 2 months and 2 weeks, but who's counting anyway. I read a post recently that said you will get an agent and get published when you are ready. It made perfect sense to me. When I first started writing and when I finished my first manuscript I thought this is it. I actually finished a book and I'm ready. I wasn't. I finished another manuscript and thought the same thing. Yet again I wasn't. I know this because the more I write and the more I read the more I learn. You pick up on the smallest of details, but small details that are so important to the outcome of your manuscript. In the past two years I have learned so much. And while I'd love to say yes I am ready, I don't know if you truly are ever ready because the fact is you never stop learning. You live and learn and that's how life is and I think with pursuing a dream/career the sea of knowledge is endless. Even when you are at the peak of your career you are still learning. So for now I'm going to keep writing, keep reading and keep learning and hopefully keep blogging (more often at least).
